Lauren Brooks

Meet Lauren, a Midwest girl with a passion for storytelling. Born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, Lauren holds a degree in English Literature from the prestigious HBCU- Central State University located in southern Ohio.

Lauren’s first book, Lesedi and the Purple Lotus, is a whimsical fantasy that tells the story of Black people. Through her work, Lauren sought to create a fantasy world that Black people could see themselves in, showcasing the rich history and magic of the community. Her focus is on portraying an authentic story that highlights the resilience and perseverance of Black people in the face of adversity.

As a descendant of enslaved Africans and a child of the diaspora, Lauren believes that Black history is often presented from the outside looking in. Thus, she aimed to provide an inside look into the core of Black people’s identity, free from the trauma of slavery. Lesedi and the Purple Lotus is a celebration of Black girl and Black boy magic that carried the community through difficult times.

With her debut book, Lauren invites readers on a journey through a magical world that’s rooted in Black culture and history.
