I have become more interested in reading books filled with poems. Poetry has often been challenging for me to connect with but this collection filled me with emotion and drew me in to reflect on my own life’s experiences. Faith’s ability to connect with her readers is truly and amazing and it gave me the space to let my guard down and reflect on my own trauma in a time that has been so challenging to do so! It is a MUST read. <3

ABout Freedom at day zero
Freedom at Day Zero is a story of balance, peace, love, and vulnerability. The journey is both difficult and necessary to share. I listened to my soul and made a choice to travel back from age 28 to age 3, to tell that girl-child that everything is now okay. I went back to meet my younger self: to hold and hug her, to scream and cry with her, to hold the space so that she could tell her story as I would tell her mine. I examined my life and all of its pieces, looking at each one individually, and isolating the events. She told me a story of strength, courage, peace, love, and finally — freedom.
Forever in dialogue.
Forever in community.
Forever in the commitment, I made to all the parts of us.
All the lives we have lived.

A collection of poems written with vulnerability

A powerful, beautiful and vulnerable collection of poems. Needed in these times!

Read this piece in one sitting, following the author on her journey of trauma, self-discovery and coming of age as a young Black woman in Erie, PA. The illustrations were lovely – wish there were more 🙂 The blank pages of “space” left in between each poem was a thoughtful and creative addition for the reader to engage or reflect. The vulnerability and voice in these poems brought me to tears at times and made me reflect on my own traumas and childhood. This collection of poems and prose touched on themes of solitude, domestic violence, mental health and finding joy again through the beauty of one’s self. A much needed addition to my library of poets as it was missing the voice of this strong, brave BIPOC.
